Breaking News: Salah’s nerves of steel send Egypt to first World Cup for 28 years

Egypt have qualified for their first World Cup since 1990 thanks to a 95th minute penalty from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

A dramatic 2-1 win over Congo was enough for the north African nation book their place at Russia 2018 in front of a euphoric crowd at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria.

The last time Egypt qualified for the World Cup, the tournament featured four nations which no longer exist but bizarrely, they’ve won the African Cup of Nations four times during that period.

This achievement will feel particularly long-overdue for goalkeeper Essam El Hadary. The 44-year-old has been capped over 150 times for his country but has never played at a World Cup, despite making his debut in 1996!
