DMX Pleads Guilty To Tax Evasion And Faces Five Years In Prison

DMX’s rap sheet is pretty long, but that has not stopped him from having run-ins with the law. The rapper born as Earl Simmons faces five years in prison after reportedly pleading guilty to tax evasion charges in court last  week (Nov. 30).

He has been avoiding  paying $1.7 million in taxes since 2005. The “Party Up” rapper didn’t file taxes between 2010 and 2015 and claimed he only earned $10,000 in 2013. The Yonkers spitter did not want to cough up the back tax money, so he paid bills from other people’s bank accounts and received payments for performances in cash.

His royalty payments were deposited in his managers’ accounts. When he participated in VH1’s (Celebrity Couples Therapy,) he gave producers a hard time until they agreed to pay him his checks without withholding taxes.

No matter who you are or whatever fame you may have achieved, the law applies equally to all, and no one is exempt from the shared obligation to pay our taxes,

acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim said in a statement.

In court, the Grammy-nominated emcee said he had the wrong people in charge of me but admitted to his wrong-doings, saying I’m responsible…I failed to file taxes.

DMX will be sentenced in Manhattan federal court on March 29th, 2018.
